THE Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) has been ranked the number one university in Tanzania and the third in East Africa in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026.
The, one of the world’s most respected university ranking systems, evaluates institutions based on teaching quality, research output, citation impact, international outlook, and engagement with industry.
MUHAS’s strong performance across these indicators highlights its growing reputation in health education, research, and innovation.
MUHAS Vice Chancellor, Prof . Appolinary Kamuhabwa, said the ranking reflects “the collective commitment, hard work, and resilience of the MUHAS community.”

According to Prof. Kamuhabwa, the recognition reinforces MUHAS’s mission to deliver transformative health training, conduct high-impact research, and provide quality services using technology and innovation.
The ranking carries significant benefits for Tanzania. It strengthens the country’s higher education profile on the global stage, demonstrating that Tanzanian universities can compete with regional and international institutions.

MUHAS graduates also play a critical role in supporting Tanzania’s healthcare system. The university trains skilled medical and allied health professionals who improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
Its research contributes to evidence-based policies, addresses pressing public health challenges, and helps advance disease prevention, health management, and system development.

The recognition also sets a benchmark for other institutions in the country, motivating them to enhance the quality of teaching, research, and service delivery.
Prof. Kamuhabwa praised the contributions of MUHAS staff, students, alumni, funders, and partners, saying the achievement was a result of collective effort and shared dedication.
He added that the ranking marks a milestone for the university and will inspire continued progress in health education, research, and service delivery, benefiting both Tanzania and the broader East African region.
With this achievement, MUHAS not only strengthens its national and regional reputation but also contributes to the broader development of Tanzania’s healthcare sector and the country’s ambition to become a leader in medical education and research.
