Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has donated 50m/- to Moyo wa Huruma Orphanage as part of New Year 2026 celebrations held at the centre in Geita Region over the weekend, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to community welfare.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, GGML’s Acting Managing Director, Duan Campbell, said the company’s role extends beyond gold mining to making a lasting positive impact on surrounding communities.

He noted that investing in social development is central to GGML’s responsibility as a key development stakeholder. “Building a healthy and hopeful community is part of our responsibility as a mining company. Our investment in social development continues to drive local, regional and national growth,” said Campbell. “We are proud to partner with Moyo wa Huruma and to see the transformation in the lives of these children.”

He added that the company is encouraged by the success of children from the centre, including those who have completed university education and secured employment.  Campbell further said GGML will continue working closely with the government to help address the challenge of street children.

The orphanage, which was established in 2006 through collaboration between GGML, the Geita Town Council and the Catholic Church, currently cares for more than 100 children. Geita Regional Commissioner Martin Shigela, commended GGML for its consistent support to vulnerable groups in the region.

He said the company’s contribution has helped children of different age’s access education and better opportunities. “I congratulate GGML for its long-standing commitment to this centre, which has enabled many children to succeed academically, including those who have pursued science-related courses and secured employment in government institutions,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Geita, Bishop Flavian Kasala, urged stakeholders to address the root causes of vulnerability among children.  He cited early pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and economic hardship as key factors contributing to the growing number of children living in difficult circumstances.

GGML’s Senior Community Relations Representative, Mussa Shunashu, said the orphanage started with only 12 children and has grown steadily over the years. He highlighted GGML’s role in funding the centre, while the local council provided land and the Catholic Diocese oversaw childcare and welfare.

In addition to the donation, GGML distributed gifts and organised entertainment, games, food and refreshments for the children and their caregivers.  One child at the centre said the support made them feel valued and part of the community.

The event underscored GGML’s continued partnership with the local community and its Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to improving the welfare of children and families in Geita Region.
