Minister: Joint projects vital for EA integration

EAST African countries need to strengthen genuine regional integration in the implementation of major development projects to boost investment and accelerating economic growth.

Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, the Planning and Investment state minister in the President’s Office, issued this appeal when opening a major investment conference, the East Africa Prospect 2026 in the UK capital of London.

The conference jointly organized by the UK-based Eastern Africa Association (EAA) and FTI Consulting based in Washington DC,  brought together key stakeholders to discuss investment opportunities and the future economic outlook of the East African region.

Speaking at the event, the minister affirmed that regional cooperation is critical for the successful implementation of large-scale development projects, as joint initiatives play a vital role in strengthening trade links, attracting long-term investment and promoting inclusive development for the region’s population.

Strategic projects currently being implemented by Tanzania in collaboration with neighboring countries include the standard gauge railway (SGR) linking the port of Dar es Salaam to markets in the Great Lakes region, apart from the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.

“These projects enhance regional connectivity, reduce transport costs and open up new opportunities for trade, industrial growth and employment for our citizens,” he said.

He assured investors and development partners that Tanzania remains a safe and politically stable country with predictable policies, and is ready to work with international partners who bring long-term capital, technology and a commitment to creating shared value.

East African countries need to strengthen regional solidarity as a tool for transforming existing opportunities into implementable projects, growing the regional economy and improving the welfare of citizens, he emphasized.

The conference attracted ambassadors, top executives of investment agencies and private companies to examine the political and economic outlook for the East African region at the moment and in the near future, he added.
